The department of English Language and Literature aims to educate philologists who have adopted ethical values, who are aware of the realities of the world, who have adopted the importance of life long learning, equipped with the knowledge, skills and approaches necessary to serve in all areas of English philology. The BA programme consisting of a total of 8 semesters in 4 years, aims to provide students with an advanced level of language skills, core knowledge in literary terms, literary history, literary theory and criticism, culture, and vocational competence in language, literature, criticism and cultural studies.
Graduates of English Language and Literature will find vocational opportunities in publishing houses, magazines, literary and cultural journals, newspapers, film studios, various public institutions (such as the Turkish Radio and Television Institution - TRT, the Foreign Office, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of National Education etc.), international institutions, as well as European Community projects and institutions. Graduates can also focus on areas of translation that require specific terminology and specialise as translators and/or interpreters in fields such as medicine, economy, archaeology, automotive and law. Job opportunities are also available in tourism. They can enter the teaching profession at public or independent schools after having gained a Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, graduates may pursue an academic career by taking up scientific study at universities (at Master’s and Doctorate levels).
